What is Systema?Systema (Sokoli Stalina) is a hand-to-hand combat system with a rich history in the steppe Cossack warriors and the Soviet and Russian special forces or Spetsnaz. Systema is Russian for "the System." And there is no nonsense in it's name, it is more than a martial art, it is a martial system involving real-life combat experience. As with many martial traditions, it is difficult to distinguish fact from legend in determining Systema's beginnings. However, it does seem likely that it was founded in the crucible of Cossack irregular warfare practices. More recent history is clearer - during the period of communist rule in the Soviet Union the ancient traditions of the warrior cultures were discouraged. But the need for a complete martial system was acknowledged, especially in the Soviet special forces (Spetsnaz). And so, the ancient martial system was kept alive and updated with modern scientific study and practice. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, the System has been taught by a handful of former Spetsnaz operatives and the instructors they have certified. But another method adopted for learning Systema has been through "training partners groups" which are informal gatherings where individuals can get together to practice and learn from one another.
